Getting Off!

Another great compilation! I Love It...

Getting Off: The Seductive Sounds of 70's Adult Cinema is another porno music compilation - but with a difference; the emphasis is definitely on creating an atmosphere by using the music, with almost no dialogue/moaning/groaning as is the usual deal with porno music comps.

On closer inspection, Getting Off: The Seductive Sounds of 70's Adult Cinema is actually a compilation of genuine (licensed) 70's library music mixed with some music (lifted from DVD) from actual 70's and early 80's porno movies, with the library music here having every chance of actually being used in adult movies back in the day.
Whatever - with Getting Off: The Seductive Sounds of 70's Adult Cinema, the guys at Lucky Monkey Records have put together a great little compilation that definitely evokes that sexy 70's porno movie sound!

Flashback

Imagination was a trio from the U.K. that put a synthesized and often clubby spin on soul groups from the 70's. In fact, a couple of 70's groups have direct ties to Imagination. Leee John and Ashley Ingram spent time during that decade playing supportive roles in the Delfonics and Chairmen of the Board, prior to Imagination's formation. Along with drummer Errol Kennedy, vocalist John and bassist Ingram formed the group in 1981. By the end of that year, they already had their first album released and a minor hit in the form of that album's title track, "Body Talk." The group's second album, 1982's In the Heat of the Night, was their most successful, spawning a trio of U.S. R&B chart hits in the form of "Just an Illusion" (#27), "Magic and Lights" (#52), and "Changes" (#46). Those singles were even more popular in their home country, with the first pair reaching the top five. The remix collection Night Dubbing appeared the following year, as did the group's third proper album, Scandalous. The group's success fizzled until their mid 90's breakup (at the time, Leee John was the only remaining original member), though 1984's "This Means War" was able to put a dent in the U.S. R&B chart. John remained active in the entertainment industry, hosting U.K. television programs and continuing his recording career as a solo artist and collaborator. Since the group's split, several compilations have been released.

Made In PT

I think most of the "disco people" knows "Made In USA - Made In USA" Lp, released in 1977 on De-Lite Records, specialy because he includes the superb "Melodies" (who have been re-edited on Moxie under the name "melodica").

This post is not about "Melodies"... Is about other great track included in the lp, called "Shake Your Body", here with a SDC Edit... ;)

What's Going On?

"When would the war stop? That's what I wanted to know...the war inside my soul."
That was the question that inspired Marvin Gaye to create his most deeply realized record, What's Going On?. This 1971 album went against the grain at Motown, which had become mired by this time in its hit-factory mentality of the '60s. Berry Gordy even fought with Gaye over releasing the album. Fortunately the artist prevailed over the businessman, and Gaye's masterpiece reached the masses, generating a stellar response and record sales (three songs went all the way to number one). What's Going On? magically combines Gaye's deeply arresting vocals and socially conscious lyrics with the perfectly flowing sound of his fellow musicians, making the album the single greatest statement of musical genius to ever come out of Motown. Gaye uses the medium of music to preach, exploring with soulful eloquence the social ills of the day--drug addiction, environmental devastation, police brutality, taxes--themes that still resonate today. Despite his often bleak observations of the times, Marvin's overall message offers the promise of redemption. The overriding message of What's Going On? is ultimately one of hope: we can save ourselves ONLY if we can learn to "holler love, love, love across the nation/together and holy/we can claim love our salvation." Filled with the utmost of sincerity, Marvin sings almost as if divinely inspired, rising to new heights, free of any cliché R&B phrasings.

This Shhhhh Edit makes use of the outtakes for a mellow string intro and neat loops to bring out the groove, making the eventual appearance of Marvin's heart-rending chorus all the more soul-affirming...
