Discognosis is a rare and obscure production by two of the greatest disco producers: Rinder & Lewis.
This was an experimental project where the sound isn't well definited. The opening track is psychedelic disco with a horror theme. "Poison Ivy" is more pop, where as "One On One" brushes up soundtrack sounds. "Good Time Man" and "Love Shortage" are good tracks which could be exploited better. "Step By Step" is the big one: wonderful disco track with repetitive vocals, piano and hypnotic arrangements. The only defect is its shortness: i've always wondered whether the 12" exists!! ...

What A Wonderful Edit

Kat returns with DJ only ZE-edits of two tracks from the influential label that fused the parallel NYC dance and punk scenes to create a new sound that they aptly christened Mutant Disco. Kid Creole and Material are the artists getting the once over from DJ Greg Wilson, the oracle on this vital and misunderstood period in music. Having already paid Credit to the Edit, Greg Wilson tastefully reconstructs Kid Creole and the Coconuts’ 1981 hit ‘I'm a Wonderful Thing, Baby’. Emphasising the driving piano and mid-tempo beats, ‘Wonderful’ is in safe hands with Greg Wilson in control. On the flip we find Material’s ‘Over and Over’ being edited by Greg, putting the funk into jazz-funk. Material were an early Bill Laswell project that delved deep into dancefloor-orientated jazz.

I Want You

George Duke showed a great deal of promise early in his career as a jazz pianist and keyboardist. Inspired early on by Les McCann, he worked with a trio in San Francisco during the mid-'60s. In 1969, Duke accompanied Jean-Luc Ponty, recording with the violinist. After eight months with Don Ellis' Orchestra, he joined Frank Zappa for much of 1970. Duke spent 1971-1972 with Cannonball Adderley and then returned to Zappa for 1973-1975. In 1975, he worked with Sonny Rollins, co-led a group with Billy Cobham, and then formed a funk band (the Clarke-Duke Project) with Stanley Clarke. In the 80's he became well sought after producer for Philp Bailey, Stephanie Mills, Rufus, Jeffrey Osborne and others...

Let It Happen

The original having already turned up on one of those Supersound double headers, and been re-edited by Beatfanatic on GAMM, you should all be pretty familiar with Vangelis and Demis Roussos' Balearic cosmic gem "Let It Happen".

Here Lindstrom and Solale deliver their own interpretation of the track (also available as the exclusive on Lindstrom's "Late Night Tales" compilation CD), which transforms the lush acoustics of the original into a slowly building stripped-down electronic groovathon. This 10" includes the pair's vocal and instrumental version, plus another short story, this time by Rob Hindle.

Astro Boogie

Ever wondered what you would get if you order one italo-space-disco-pizza with extra bass and arpeggios? I guess you get a box with phreek plus one's new black label ep in it...

The three italian stallions ivan savoldi, allesandro cattanatto and giovanni guerretti are deeply influenced by the cosmic sound of the late 70s and early 80s. but they manage to apply those old vibes to a modern deep-house template in a virtuoso way, making their sound equally comfortable with the past and the present.

On their first two 12inches they opened up "new disco dimensions" and then got caught in the "cosmic slope". Both releases got strong support by peeps like prins thomas, dj language, lopazz and kaos. This time around they squeeze out more smooth, slow grooving tracks like "bikini"and "astro boogie" while on the final track "new york dolls" they even reveal a slight fondness for a glam rock attitude.
